How a handheld laser welder works

Pulsed laser energy is directed precisely into the weld joint by high-precision focusing optics, so that the base material melts only where a bond is required. The surrounding surface structure remains virtually unchanged, allowing even delicate contours to be joined with a barely perceptible heat-affected zone.

·   The contactless process eliminates the need for an electrode and produces clean, slag-free welds, saving time during post-processing.

·   The localized heat input, resulting from the high energy density of the focused beam, reduces tarnish and minimizes distortion, even in thin-walled materials.

·   Due to the increased welding speed, laser welding is many times faster than conventional TIG welding, while maintaining consistently high weld quality.

·   The uniform weld appearance, created without spatter and with a very narrow weld pool width, reduces the need for time-consuming polishing and grinding steps.

Our devices come standard with an integrated wire feed for single-wire applications. Optionally, we can also process double or triple wires – for maximum flexibility with different materials and applications. If you also want to prepare or clean surfaces, we recommend taking a look at our laser cleaning machines, which feature the same ergonomics and user interface, ensuring a consistent operating philosophy across your production environment.

Power classes 1500 W – 3000 W: air-cooled vs. water-cooled in practical use

In the power range between 1500 and 3000 W, both air- and water-cooled laser welding systems offer reliable performance – but with different focuses in daily use. Air-cooled systems are ideal for flexible applications that require mobility, compact design, and straightforward commissioning. They are particularly suitable for occasional welding work or changing locations.

Water-cooled systems, on the other hand, demonstrate their strengths in continuous operation and higher thermal loads. Effective cooling ensures stable processes even during longer welding cycles and maximum power utilization. This allows demanding tasks to be completed efficiently and without interruption.

Both variants are field-proven – the choice depends on the specific application. We would be happy to help you find the right system for your needs.

Laser welding gun vs. conventional processes – differences and advantages

A laser welding pistol is a handheld, wire-feed welding head that directs a focused laser beam from a compact source to the joining zone. It replaces traditional torches or electrode holders, operates without contact, and enables slim, spatter-free welds with a minimal heat-affected zone.

Abbreviation Long form Principle / Special feature
MIG Metal Inert Gas Welding Electric arc, consumable filler wire, and inert shielding gas (argon, helium)
TIG / WIG  Tungsten Inert Gas Welding  Non-consumable tungsten electrode, inert gas; very clean but slow welds

In direct comparison, the laser welding gun demonstrates its strengths particularly where distortion, rework, or cycle times are process-critical. The following points illustrate the practical advantages:

·   Significantly higher seam speed increases output without loss of quality.

·   Extremely small heat-affected zone protects thin-walled or heat-sensitive materials from distortion.

·   No electrode wear and no gas consumption reduce operating costs and setup time.

·   Spatter- and slag-free seam aesthetics significantly reduce grinding and polishing effort.

In combination with one of our laser safety cabins, it also offers a controlled work area for laser welding and cleaning processes – safe, practical, and available from us as a complete solution.

Typical areas of application and practical examples

Our laser welding systems can be quickly integrated into the automotive, construction, and metalworking industries thanks to their ease of use and precise control. The systems are energy-efficient, require minimal maintenance, and are gentle on even aluminum and coated materials. Typical laser welding applications include:

·   Pipelines, tanks, and fittings in the food and pharmaceutical industries are welded hygienically without significant discoloration.

·   Machine housings and conveyor systems can be repaired or modified directly during production.

·   Stainless steel railings, staircases, and facade elements in metal construction and architecture are joined precisely without significant heat input.

·   Frames, brackets, and sheet metal cladding in mechanical and plant engineering can be welded quickly and with minimal distortion.

·   Thin sheet metal joints on vehicle bodies, trailers, or special vehicles can be reworked or repaired.

·   Housings and profiles in e-mobility and vehicle construction are joined with minimal porosity and spatter-free welding.

·   Aluminum tanks, heat sinks, and thin-walled housings in mechanical engineering can be welded without significant distortion.

·   Weld seams in repair and rework cases can be repaired without removing components.

·   Defects, cracks or breaks can be repaired with minimal material removal.

Whether for prototypes or production lines, laser welding reduces process costs and ensures consistently high quality. Our application videos demonstrate the process at real-time and provide additional insights.

FAQ: Laser welding machine

In our FAQ page, we answer the most frequently asked questions about laser welding and laser welding machines. One of the questions we receive most frequently? We'll answer it right here!

What are the advantages of laser welding?

Laser welding offers a variety of benefits that make it a preferred welding method in various industries.

High precision and accuracy

One of the most significant advantages of laser welding is its high precision. Precise control of the laser beam allows for extremely fine welds, even with complex geometries or small components. This high level of precision enables precise alignment of the weld and minimizes the risk of welding defects or rework.

Minimal heat-affected zone

Another important advantage of laser welding is its minimal heat-affected zone. Due to the highly concentrated energy of the laser beam, the heat is applied in a very localized manner, resulting in minimal heat spread in the surrounding material. This minimizes the formation of thermal distortion or deformation of the workpieces, which is particularly beneficial for thinner materials or delicate components.

Fast Welding Speeds and Efficiency

Laser welding also enables fast welding speeds, leading to increased productivity and efficiency in manufacturing. The high power density of the laser beam allows welding processes to be completed in a shorter time without compromising on quality.

Ability to Weld Complex Geometries

Another advantage of laser welding is its ability to weld complex geometries. Due to the precise control of the laser beam, even challenging and hard-to-reach areas can be reached, making laser welding ideal for manufacturing components with complex shapes or structures.

Why choose laser welding?

Overall, laser welding offers a combination of precision, efficiency, and versatility, making it a highly attractive welding method for a wide range of applications across various industries.
